The Sal Rapaglia Cup remained in CSL hands for the sixth year running last Sunday after Everton Westchester Eagles (above) outshot the LISFL’s Glen Cove 7-6 on penalties in the final at the Verrazano Sports Complex.
Ariel Mesa leveled five minutes from time to force the shoot-out. Glen Cove had led earlier from an Emmanuel Gomes own goal.
Eagles, the Manning State Cup holders, began the one-day six-team tournament for New York’s top amateur clubs by blanking defending Rapaglia champions Lansdowne Bhoys 2-0.
Former Pancyprian Phil Bannister and Martin Dadaj — the latter after dribbling through the Lansdowne defense — scored for ten-man Eagles. They had Bledi Bardic ejected in the 20th minute.
“Landsdowne were a great team and were reinforced with new players,” Eagles coach Oliver Papraniku complemented the two-time CSL titlists.
Next up were EDSL envoys South Stars. Hat tricks by Josue Ortiz and Tyler Botte, and a brace by Mesa, completed an 8-0 rout and put Eagles in the final. Then came Mesa’s late leveler against Glen Cove that set-up the dramatic shoot-out.
“A great day for us, although very stressful,” conceded Papraniku. He hailed Andreas Chronis, Panagiotis Onouforou, Dadaj and Bannister as his tournament standouts.
Thank you Eagles for keeping the cup in the CSL!
