Pancyprian and Lansdowne win 1st round games

With a rich history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the New York Pancyprian-Freedoms go into the 103rd edition of the tournament hoping to add to it, starting out tomorrow by hosting the USL PDL’s New York Red Bulls U23s (7:30 p.m., Belson Stadium, Jamaica, NY).

Lansdowne Bhoys are making their first appearance in the US Open Cup, but they are not a new club. The Bhoys played their first game in the 1997 in the third division of New York’s Cosmopolitan Soccer League, slowly rising in the ranks before capturing the title for the past two years running.

The 103rd edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup kicked off yesterday with 22 games taking place across the country. The opening round featured 18 teams from the Premier Development League (PDL), 14 from the National Premier Development League (NPSL) and the 14 amateur teams from open qualifying. At the time of this writing, 6 of the 14 amateur teams had found ways to advance over their PDL/NPSL opponents -- Southie FC (Mass), Aromas Cafe (VA), West Chester United (PA), Landsdowne Bhoys (NY) New York Pancyprian (NY) and Harpos FC (CO)... Roy Sandeman scored on each side of the break as Boston-based USASA outfit Southie FC pulled off the first round U.S. Open Cup upset in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over PDL side Seacoast United Phantoms... Lansdowne Bhoys and N.Y. Pancyprian Freedoms of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League pulled off shockers both earning 2-1 victories in the first round. The full 2016 bracket can be seen at TheCup.us!
