Lansdowne Yonkers F.C. is crawling out of their substandard start of the season, enjoying a four-match unbeaten run in all competitions after starting the campaign with four straight CSL losses.
Summer signing Jack Doherty has played a huge role in the Bhoys’ undergoing revival, scoring 11 times in the club’s last seven matches, which amounts up to half of the team’s goals in October.
“Scoring is his thing,” Lansdowne veteran center half Sean Kelly told a CSL reporter about Doherty.
The Irish converted striker’s last two goals for Lansdowne versus Doxa S.C. on Saturday night home at Tibbetts Brook Park Field 3 didn’t just usher the team to a much needed 3-2 win over the Greek club but also earned him his first CSL Player of the Week award.
Doherty is the third Lansdowne player to win the accolade after Ovan Oakley and ex-Bhoy Mamadou Guirassy. The Irish team is now the CSL club with the second most CSL Player Week winners alongside Cedar Stars Academy behind NY Greek Americans who had four players win the selection: Joseph Ruesgen, Colin Murphy, Bradley Johnson and Charlie Ledula.
Doherty’s first goal on Saturday night pushed Lansdowne up 2-1 over Doxa in the 25th minute as he buried the ball home from the six-yard box amid a melee.
His second goal was the 3-2 winner in the second half, which he scored by blasting Kelly’s low cross to the lower near left corner of the net with his left.
The 24-year-old previously played for Waterford, Ipswich, Limerick and Longford in Ireland before signing with Lansdowne in the summer.
Doherty leads the Yonkers club in scoring in the league, racking four goals to place himself in fifth spot in the top scorers' list.
His next match with Lansdowne is against third placed NY Greek Americans away from home at Hofstra University on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m.
